CROSS CULTURE UNDERSTANDING

PERSONAL, FAMILY, AND WORK VALUES
A.      Definition of Personal, Family, and Work Values
1.        Personal Values
Personal values evolve from circumstances with the external world and can change over time. Integrity in the application of values refers to its continuity; persons have integrity if they apply their values appropriately regardless or arguments or negative reinforcement from others. Values are applied appropriately when they are applied in the right area. For example, it would be appropriate to apply religious values in time of happiness as well as in times of despair.
Personal values are implicitly related to choice; they guide decisions by allowing for an individual’s choices to be compared to each choice’s associated values.
Personal values developed early in life may be resistant to change. They may be derived from those of particular groups or systems, such as culture, religion, and political party. However, personal values are not universal; one’s genes, family, nation and historical environment help determine one’s personal values. This is not to say that the value concept themselves are not universal, merely that each individual possess a unique conception of them i.e. a personal knowledge of the appropriate values for their own genes, feelings and experience.
2.        Family Values
Family values are values supposedly characteristic of a traditional family unit, typically those of high moral standards and discipline. The values a family develops are traditionally the foundation for how children learn, grow and function in the world.
Your family values definition consists of ideas passed down from generation to generation.  It boils down to the philosophy of how you want to live your family life.  Three traditional basic tasks in life have been described as work, play and love.  There are many activities that fall under these categories that define our values.  All of them are important and it takes work to balance these tasks.  However, we often get caught up in work and other activities and neglect play and love.  Often times we work hard because we are invested in our career goals, material things and financial rewards.  Yet without a balanced life of incorporating play and having loving relationships, our lives become stressful, overwhelming and unsatisfying.  Traditionally people define their values as stating that the family comes first, yet they find themselves with very little time or energy left over for spending time with the family.
3.        Work Values
Work values can be defined as personal attitude concerning what he/she does, loyalty to company, the relationship with member in company, involvement in business, and career in business. Work value is important, because it influences organizational behavior, performance of work, productivities and commitment in organization.
